The story behind the Black Bart Pirate Flag, a pirate like no other
John Roberts aka Black Bart, better known as Bartholomew Roberts, a first name said to pay tribute to the pirate Bartholomew Sharp. Born in the United Kingdom in 1682, he would have taken to the sea from the age of 13 to become one of the most famous pirates of the golden age of piracy, with the most successful career in history.
Indeed, he is credited with many exploits, such as the time he captured a fleet of 22 ships in a single capture, which is very impressive. During his years of scouring the seas, he would have taken possession of more than 400 ships. In addition, The Black Baronet is said to have initiated the famous Pirate Code.
He was an unusual pirate, apart from his personality that did not fit the stereotype of pirate. He was a neat person, well dressed, with good manners, did not drink alcohol and was an excellent writer. Perhaps the reason for his great success. He would have inspired Captain Hook of Peter Pan for his taste of good manners.
Black Bart’s Pirate Flag toasting with death
At the helm of several ships along his pirate life, such as the Fortune, the Royal Fortune and the Good Fortune, he also had many pirate flags during his adventures. Here, it is his 1st pirate flag, we see him always well primed toasting with death. It shows his love of risk, intense life and abundance. Some will see an hourglass, as a reminder to his enemies that their death is near.
Moreover, a quote from him perfectly sums up the philosophy of this pirate flag:
What do you get from honest work? Meager rations, low wages and hard work. With us it’s plenty till you’re hungry, pleasure and ease, freedom and power; how to swing if you’re counting, when all you risk in the worst case is the sad look you make at the end of the rope. A short but good existence will be my motto.
If you, too, want to live a free, intense life of abundance pay homage to him by getting the Black Bart flag toasting with death.
